How did the band come to be?
Inspired by Punk in the late 70’s I started a music fanzine in 1979 – Alternative Sounds – but I always knew it wasn’t going to be enough, and then started ATTRITION in late 1980 with my then girlfriend Julia and her brother Ashley… the fanzine finished in 1981 (apart from its 2017 rebirth as a local music series of CD’s) and ATTRITION has been putting out albums and touring the globe ever since… Do you have any releases coming up in the new year? Yes…We have just released our new CD single, The Great Derailer, with accompanying video…and there will be a full album later this year (The Black Maria)… https://attritionuk.bandcamp.com/album/the-great-derailer at the same time we have various reissues in the pipeline… What is something you want listeners to take away from your music? I primarily write music for myself… in the same way I painted or sculpted at art college before I ever got into making music…I “see” music as much as “hear” it… so my music can be very sound-scapey… (a reason I have also made a number of film soundtracks)… and if someone can relate to the atmosphere I create then I hope that can help them, in the same way my favourite music has helped me so much over the years… perhaps that feeling that someone else understands the things we go through… art and music is such a good way to express ourselves in that way… With everything that is going on in our world what is one cause or organization that you are passionate about? I was always involved in animal rights in the early days (we appeared on the PETA “Animal Liberation” compilation in 19876 alongside Siouxsie, Nina Hagen, Lene Lovich, Chris n Cosey, The Colourfield etc etc) was involved in the anti-Nuclear movement around the same time… as a Vegetarian/vegan for most of my life that is something I am very passionate about too… and that relates to climate change too… there are so many things going on we need to pay attention too… What is your writing process like? In all of my work… regardless of the final piece or style… I start with abstract atmospherics… electronics usually… and gradually rhythms and melodies emerge… alongside the words if there are to be any…. Much like order from chaos…. I believe in that… I write the basics of a song myself and then bring in guest musicians if I need them….it keeps it flexible and creative…. To follow up with the last question, what inspires your sound? My life. My everyday experience. And of course that includes music I listen to… and I have taken on influences over the years… from the initial punk and post punk to experimental industrial sounds in the eighties then neo classical influences and later dance influences (drum n bass fleetingly..)…I use whatever I need to… Any tours coming up soon?
