Nashville based singer-songwriter Alyssa Joseph shares her personal experiences with navigating relationships in a raw, relatable track titled “sadboy”. With her tongue-in-cheek perspective on the kinds of relationships we often find ourselves in, she also provides a refreshingly honest take on something I think many people struggle with: recognizing and accepting that maybe the person we think we want most, isn’t really who we want. Maybe we just get stuck on the way we idealized them and what that meant to us, rather than who they really are.
Upon first listening, Joseph’s grungy, soulful sound is what initially drew me in. When I focused on the lyrics, I couldn’t help but reflect on my own relationships. The subtle sarcasm and her vulnerability were all too familiar for me, as I’ve also had an experience dating a “sadboy”. Looking back at how exhausting that relationship was, I felt a connection with this song because my feelings about the situation felt validated. It’s quite freeing when music can play that role in your life and I think Alyssa Joseph has found a way to share her feelings and experiences in ways that empower and encourage other people to be honest with themselves. With this in mind, I’m really looking forward to what she’ll do next! Listen to the song here! Be sure to check out Alyssa Joseph on her socials to see what she’s up to!
