Cleveland indie band shelter pup. are back with a new single “Ghosts in the Graveyard,” which was recently released on October 2nd. This track is about acceptance of our mortality. The penned lyrics are contemplative in nature, focusing on the subject of death and dying. Somber and melancholic, the song also instills a sense of reminiscing on the past. The song title is a reference to an old childhood game, similar to hide-and-seek. The difference is that it’s played at nighttime.
“Ghosts in the Graveyard” matches in tone with the band’s previous single (It’s) Your Funeral” - - a calmly serene, emo sound, yet heavy lyricism. The two tracks are finely polished works that follow a handful of singles and demos, and two EPs: 2018’s “Apricity” and 2020’s “Just Be Here.” Frontman Trevor Stout has been releasing music with shelter pup. since early 2018. The band first began as a solo project, until later solidifying the lineup with a drummer and bassist. Stout explains that there’s a sense of duality behind the band’s name: “The angsty side emphasizes the fact that we’re all comparable to shelter animals who have been through hell, yet we’re healing from these hardships on a daily basis. All of this is taking place simultaneously as we set out to determine our place in the world. And the more wholesome side of the band’s name is represented by the period at the end, and the word ‘pup’ is an acronym that stands for patience, understanding, and peace.” Stout has plans to release a new EP in 2021. There has been a cancellation of a few shows, due to the coronavirus pandemic. But it’s been a blessing in disguise, as the free time has enabled him to have a chance to slow down, write more music, refine material, and determine his next direction. The release of “Ghosts in the Graveyard” is accompanied by a lyric video that contains stunning imagery of nature. The footage opens with a befitting scene of a graveyard, and then cuts throughout to visuals that correspond with the song lyrics. One particular highlight of the track is the dynamic vocal performance that showcases Stout’s range. “Ghosts in the Graveyard” strikes with fierce, poetic lyricism, as shelter pup. sets themselves apart with an honest voice and sincere artistry. “I’ll be a ghost before they collect my soul. Familiarize myself with my friends out in the catacombs.” Check out the new shelter pup. single “Ghosts in the Graveyard” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SK8MTcOGR-c Connect with shelter pup. on their social media platforms: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/shelterpupmusic/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thisisshelterpup/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/shelterpupcle Bandcamp: https://shelterpup.bandcamp.com/ Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/2h4vIAEty2yGhRHMnSjNkM
