Merival is a welcome little surprise. With a sound that is somewhere between Jazz and
Bedroom Pop, her single “No Brakes” is a nice, delicate piece of music that is very different from
what we’re hearing on the radio these days. Maybe it’s not going to get a lot of airplay, but it’s
an excellent song, with simple and raw lyrics, paired against a rich background of choral vocals,
jazzy acoustic guitar and folksy drums. “No Brakes” is the kind of song that songwriters
everywhere wish they could write, but Merival actually accomplishes it. This is the kind of song
that fits in nicely in both small coffee shops and large cinematic scenes, and hopefully it gets
heard by more than a handful of people.
