Post-hardcore band, Havoc Faction released their newest EP, Welcome to the Fight, on January 20, 2020. A science-fictional story mixed with an alternative rock structure, heavily influenced by grunge, and incorporating the modernized element of electronic music, makes this an exciting release for the genre. Pulling influence from bands like, Thirty Seconds to Mars and Thrice, the EP from Havoc Faction brings back the classic alternative rock sounds from the early 2000’s with a current edge . Is the 2000’s alt. rock era back??
Havoc Faction are a concept band, following the story of Backdraft, a character reflecting themes such as perseverance, and self-conflict. The story is set in the desolation of post-apocalyptic mayhem, and articulates how making a positive impact in the world is possible by standing up for what you believe in. Mixing a variety of musical styles, and lyrically creating a powerful message, the EP is enthralling and dynamic.
Lyrically the story of the release is uplifting and positive in nature, musically it packs a punch with a complimentary combination of different musical effects, styles, and genres. Having a movie soundtrack-like vibe, it’s definitely an EP that encompasses all of the right components. For me, it felt like I was listening to a movie, as it progressed through the tracks. Each track is slightly different, telling a story of the character, each struggle that he was going through, and the way he was overcoming it. What was interesting throughout the entire EP was the incorporation of effects and synthesizers, a concept that the band started experimenting with for this release. They really ran with their story-line concept, and made it a compelling narrative, and sound to follow. It will be interesting to see the development of Havoc Faction as a project; with their modernized rock sound, they could be really big in the future.
